VIRAL ENCEPHALITIS
In January 1996, "K" had a high fever rise in the middle of the night that caused a prolonged seizure, causing lack of oxygen to her brain. She is developmentally delayed and has a seizure disorder because of her illness. Doctors labeled her illness presumed viral encephalitis. We are still unsure of the cause of her illness.
"K" continues to have physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech followed by the Braile School. She has cranial sacrial therapy once a month. She has had therapeutic horse back riding. Last October (2000) "K" had a two week intense program of cranial sacrial. This improved her drinking from 1 ounce to 6-8 ounces at a time.
We found Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy of Arizona on the internet from the MUMS list. We also asked our neurologist about HBOT to make sure "K" would be safe.
I was sent information about HBOT and information from a medical journal I asked for. I felt HBOT of AZ was well informed and very courteous to my questions. I felt we were making the right choice to come from IA to AZ.
"K" seems happier now. We see more smiles and eye contact from her. She has been reaching and grabbing things more than she was before treatments. She has been making more verbal sounds. We see more smiles and eye contact with us.
I think HBOT is a chance for improvement. No matter how small or large, the changes are wonderful, especially for parents to see or hear from others of what they notice different.
